WHO
MAKES COMPUTER BRAINS?
In
today's computer marketplace there are two main companies that manufacture
microprocessor CPUs; Intel Corporation and Motorola Corporation. Intel makes
CPUs for IBM and IBM-compatible computers. The older ones had "names" like 8088
(or XT), 8086, 80286 (or AT), and 80386 (or just 386) and 80486 (or just 486).
Newer ones have names like PENTIUM II, PENTIUM III and
PENTIUM IV.
Motorola makes CPUs
for Apple Macintosh, Commodore AMIGA and Atari Mega and Atari ST computers.
These are called the 68000, 68020, 68030, 68040 and 68060. In both instances,
the higher numbers represent the more advanced and expensive CPUs. Motorola's
newer microprocessors are called PowerPCs. Their
G3 (Generation 3) chip is
used in Apple's new iMac computer, an inexpensive but powerful
home desktop computer.
